Fables of Venice

With apologies to Hugo Pratt.

I had a residency at the Emily Harvey Foundation this spring of 2024. It was wonderful to spend 5 weeks in Venice. My project is a series of short animations about real and fictional characters associated with Venice. I spent my time in Venice doing research, writing and planning, taking photos, recording audio and drawing.

Here are a few drawings and clips. More to come soon.

Lamp projects with Tom Igoe

Tom Igoe and I have been making lamps out of a wide range of materials: parts of old tee-shirts, paper, fabric, tin foil and more. It has been a lot of fun. Here’s a few experiments.

salad salad rabbit beast

Eric Hagan and I made a piece for the Dorothy Strelsin Memorial Community Garden on Suffolk Street on the Lower East Side.

The “trellis topper”, or weathervane, was built from painted laser cut basswood, metal bearings, shaft collars, rod and other hardware on a wooden bass. We cut vinyl coated canvas flags and attached them to the trellises. We made garden creatures, laser cut painted basswood, which were scattered throughout the garden.

The piece was popular with the members of the garden community, who gave us the funds to rebuild the trellis topper in sturdier materials, 1/4″ plywood. It is currently in the garden.

Tunnel Books and more

I have been creating tunnel books based on, yes, illuminated manuscripts of the Book of Revelation. I have also been creating hand sewn cut paper books with images from Japanese kaiju movies.
