Installation with Christy Rupp at ABC No Rio

ABC No Rio, historic lower east side community art center, is to be demolished to be replaced by a very elegant new building. Christy Rupp and I collaborated on an installation for the last show in the space. We were both involved in No Rio in the 80’s; the show we were in featured artists who have been involved in No Rio throughout its 30 year history.

Our piece was a two eyed diorama. Christy’s work featured a beating heart floating against a forested backdrop, mine had elements of the circulatory system floating in front of a bleaker forest scene. Here’s a few pictures.

A. More Store at Printed Matter

Co-lab had a return to the A.More Store exhibition at Printed Matter to celebrate the publication of A Book about Colab (and related Activities).
It was a great show, multiples by many Colab artists. I made a couple of flashing A.More Store signs, as well as some wax paper/tin foil and fabric jewelry. Here’s a few pictures.

A Book About Colab (and Related Activities)

Max Schumann, Director of Printed Matter, edited a book about Colab: A Book About Colab (and Related Activities). There’s a foreword and afterword by Walter Robinson. I was a member of Colab back in the day and was very happy to be included in this book.

Pockets Video

A lot of items of women’s clothing are sadly lacking in pockets. To address this problem, I made a lot of pockets that could be worn around your neck, or tied around your waist from old tee-shirts and sweatshirts. These were cut out on a laser cutter and hand stitched together.

Jeff Feddersen made a video of me talking about my pockets and some of the other work I did on the laser cutter during my sabbatical when I was a visiting scholar at ITP.  Here it is.

Freud Book

I made another motorized book using an Arduino and servo motors. This one has pages embroidered with a brief quote from Freud about dream interpretation, along with illustrations.

Dreams and Stories from Freud and Augustine

I have been working on short animated pieces based on City of God by Augustine and dream interpretation material of Sigmund Freud. I decided to make physical objects using some of the same imagery and texts, combining digital fabrication techniques with hand building and embroidery.

The imagery from these texts, (from Freud, small children as vermin, the human body as a house; from Augustine, Rome burning, seven headed beasts, generals eating entrails) was both inspirational and somewhat disturbing.

I have laser etched on a variety of materials, usually recycled fabrics, such as old towels and sweatshirts. I have also created cardboard automata using some of the images from the stories. Additionally, I have created a hand-sewn and embroidered book with text and images from Freud that uses a potentiometer and servo motors to turn its pages.

Here’s a video of one of the automata.

And here are a few images of the laser etched towels, automata, and books.
