Pockets Video

A lot of items of women’s clothing are sadly lacking in pockets. To address this problem, I made a lot of pockets that could be worn around your neck, or tied around your waist from old tee-shirts and sweatshirts. These were cut out on a laser cutter and hand stitched together.

Jeff Feddersen made a video of me talking about my pockets and some of the other work I did on the laser cutter during my sabbatical when I was a visiting scholar at ITP.  Here it is.

Arduino Day

I made a presentation on using comics to teach technology at Arduino Day at ITP. It was fun, despite the horrible cold I had. Make streamed it live, the whole event is on youTube. Here’s a pdf of my presentation.

Red Burns

I first spoke with Red when I was an incoming student at ITP and found that she was my advisor. I was a little afraid of her, I had encountered her at a group interview for applicants to ITP and I remember her brusqueness with some at the meeting who seemed to be trying to anticipate her views on culture and technology ( “The book is dead” followed by Red’s retort “I love books!”). She was warm and generous, and I looked forward to our chats every semester during advisement.

I came to know her much better over the years. Red was bluntly honest, fierce and compassionate. She was a mentor to me, as she was to so many others. Her vision of technology and technologists evolving from disciplines other than engineering, her ability to create an atmosphere of collaboration and experimentation made ITP a very special place. ITP has managed to stay on the forefront of technology while employing an extraordinary faculty and staff who are both very smart and very kind. Red wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lasersaur cuts lasersaur!

A very blurry video of the ITP Lasersaur cutting a lasersaur. Holding vacuum and camera at the same time did not lead to successful videography, but hey, the thing is cutting. Thank you Eric Hagan, great collaborator! Also ITP faculty and staff and Nordt Labs!

ITP Camp 2

It’s been a couple of weeks since the end of ITP camp, and I have to say, it was memorable once again. The laser cutter! I spent a lot of time cutting and etching fabric, glass and wood. I would like to have one of these at home, though I might never go outside again.

There were many great sessions- Jeff Feddersen’s Making Electricity stood out, as did all of Tom Igoe’s pcomp sessions. I learned a bit more about Processing with Matt Parker and Andres Colubri, also integrating Processing with 3D software Rhino, as well as a framework for App development, Cinder. And Jitter from Gabe Barcia-Colombo. I am looking forward to working in Processing for Android with Arduino. Kate Hartman’s wearable session was great too. This year I gave a session on Instructional Comics. There was plenty more, I unfortunately had to leave early for family stuff. But I will probably be back, to see old and new friends, as well as catch up on some new technology.

I now have my ethernet shield up and running with my Arduino, turning servo motors from a webpage. More to come soon, with pictures.
